Basic Crochet Stitches

For any of you who read my posts will see that I’m always crocheting something, a lot of unfinished or pointless things but I did finish most projects. Here is how to do some crochet stitches. I will link some easy to follow videos as well following my step explanations.

I usually have the yarn wrapped behind my pinky finger,in front of the ring finger and middle finger, behind the pointer finger and then hold the yarn with my middle finger and thumb. The tail of the yarn is being held with the middle finger and thumb just to be clear.

Yarn Over

This is pretty much taking your crochet hook and putting it under the hook, then on top of it again to have a loop left on you.

Chains

This is the very first thing you must know to start crocheting.

What I do is to put the hook under the yarn, twist it 360°,yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop to form a knot. To make a chain is to just yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop.

Here is a video showing you how to create crochet chains.

Single Crochet

Once you have a foundation of chains or stitches made, you make 1 extra chain and flip the project over (turn it around). You should just have 1 loop on your hook. Now, push the hook through the chain/stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop. You will now have 2 loops. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop again. Voila! A Single Crochet.

Double Crochet

Once you have a foundation of chains or stitches made, you make 2 chains and flip the project over. You will have 1 loop on your hook. Now, yarn over, push the yarn through the chain/stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop. You will have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops, then yarn over and pull the yarn through the last 2 loops. Boom. Done. Double Crochet.

Treble Crochet

Once you have a foundation of chains or stitches made, you make  3 chains and flip your project over. You will have 1 loop on your hook. This is like the double crochet. So, yarn over and push the hook through the chain/stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop. The only way this differs from the double crochet is from this part. You will have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through 1 loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops and yarn over again and pull through 3 loops.

The Slip Stitch

This is simple. Have a loop on your yarn, push the hook through the chain/loop and yarn over. Pul the yarn through both loops and you’re done.

The videos are not mine. However, they are simple stitches found on Crochet Guru’s channel and I thought they would be useful especially if you’re a beginner.
